How to create an online marketplace in 2026
The four decisions that determine whether a marketplace launches — model, supply, payments and trust — and the order to make them in.
Kreezalid
Most marketplace projects do not fail on the idea. They fail between the idea and the first transaction, in the months spent building something that could have been configured.
Pick the model before the features
A marketplace earns in one of a few ways: a commission on services, on rentals, on product sales, or subscriptions from listers in a directory. That choice decides everything downstream — whether you need a calendar, a cart, a deposit or a billing cycle.
Solve one side of the market first
Supply and demand do not arrive together. Decide which side is harder to get, and go get it manually before you automate anything.
Payments are a product, not a task
Splitting a payment between sellers, holding a deposit and paying out on a schedule is where custom builds overrun. Treat it as a requirement from day one.
Trust is what makes it a market
Reviews, messaging, verified profiles and a clear dispute path are not decoration — without them, the transaction happens off your platform.
