App Store · Gift cards
Gift cards your buyers can spend on any seller of your marketplace
Your storefront sells cards, the recipient receives theirs by e-mail on the day the buyer chose, and spends it at checkout, on any listing, in one order or several. The money stays with your marketplace until the card is spent; each seller is paid their share when they accept the order, as for any other order.

How it works for your buyers
- 1
They choose a card
On your storefront’s /gift-cards page: an amount, the recipient, a message and the day it arrives. They pay on Stripe.
- 2
The recipient gets it by e-mail
On the chosen day, in French or English, with the code and its expiry date. The buyer gets a copy.
- 3
They spend it at checkout
One step before payment: type the code, see what is left to pay. Up to three cards per order, the balance kept for next time.
- 4
Nothing left to pay? No payment page
When the cards cover everything, the order is placed at once. Otherwise Stripe charges only the rest.
Where the money is, at every step
The part that matters to an operator, and the reason a gift card on a marketplace is harder than in a single shop: when the card is bought, nobody knows which seller it will pay.
- At purchase
- The full amount reaches your marketplace’s Stripe balance, then your bank with your other takings. Until it is spent, the card is a debt of your marketplace to its holder: the admin list shows what is still to be spent.
- At checkout
- The card’s balance is set aside the moment the payment page opens, so it cannot be spent twice. An abandoned payment gives it back when the payment page expires, an hour later.
- When the seller accepts
- Their earnings are paid as usual: from the bank card’s payment first, the rest from the gift card’s. Your commission does not change. Never before acceptance.
- On a refund
- The bank card gets back what it paid, the gift card the rest, on its balance. If the seller was already paid, their transfers are taken back.
You set the rules
Amounts
The amounts on offer (25, 50 and 100 by default), and if you wish a free amount from 5 to 1,000.
Validity
From 1 to 36 months after purchase, 12 by default, printed on the card and in the e-mails.
E-mails
The recipient’s and the buyer’s e-mails, in French and English, editable like your other notifications.
Follow-up
Every card sold, its balance and delivery in your back office. Codes are never shown there, only to their recipient.
What it needs
Gift cards work with Stripe Connect payments on Stripe’s hosted payment page (Settings › Payments). The embedded card form and the other payment providers pay sellers directly, which leaves no room for a card’s share. Your marketplace’s Stripe account must settle in the currency you sell in.
Questions
Does it cost extra?
No. The app is free on the App Store. Stripe charges its usual fee on the card’s payment, as on any payment your marketplace takes.
Can a card be spent with several sellers?
Yes. A card is not tied to a seller: it can pay a cart with several sellers’ orders, or be spent over several orders until its balance is used.
When is the seller paid?
When they accept the order, like an order paid by bank card. A gift card never pays a seller before the order is accepted.
What happens to an expired card?
It can no longer pay. Its unspent balance stays with the marketplace: whether you refund or extend it is your decision, to state in your terms of sale.
Are codes safe?
Codes are 16 random characters, stored hashed and encrypted, never in clear. Wrong guesses are limited, and nobody in the back office sees a full code.
